Reduced Post-op Opioid Prescribing for Common Outpatient Procedure Achieves Spillover Effect

Implementing evidence-based opioid prescribing recommendations for one popular outpatient elective surgery—laparoscopic cholecystectomy—at the University of Michigan Health System has drastically reduced postoperative opioid dispensing by nearly 75%.

“These recommendations have also resulted in equally good, if not better care for the patient,” said Michael Englesbe, MD, FACS, a transplant surgeon at the health system, in Ann Arbor.

Moreover, the recommendations have
