Health Care Payors Slow to Implement Policies to Mitigate Opioid Dependence

Health care insurers, including Medicare and Medicaid, are slow to pursue effective policy plans that encourage prescription limitations or nonpharmacologic treatment courses for pain management, according to a recent study.

Researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health analyzed the coverage policies of Medicaid, Medicare Advantage and some commercial health plans to see whether they focused on quantity limits and step therapy (JAMA 2018;1[2]:e120235).
