Steep Rise in Rural Infants Born With Opioid Withdrawal

The number of infants born with drug withdrawal symptoms from opioids grew substantially faster in rural communities than in cities, according to a new study.

The trend poses a significant public health threat: Newborns with neonatal abstinence syndrome from opioid exposure in the womb are more likely to have seizures, low birth weight, and breathing, sleeping and feeding problems, the investigators noted.
