Increase in Morbidity and Mortality Seen With General Anesthesia for Hip Fracture

In contrast to the REGAIN trial (N Engl J Med 2021;385[22]:2025-2035), a propensity-matched analysis of the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database has found that general anesthesia is associated with an increase in postoperative morbidity and mortality relative to regional anesthesia in patients undergoing hip fracture surgery.
