As Deaths Rise, AMA Report Calls for Expanded Care for Substance Use Disorder

Illicit drugs—from fentanyl to methamphetamine—are now the majority of overdose deaths

A new report released by the American Medical Association’s (AMA’s) Opioid Task Force is calling for more support for substance use disorder treatment amid rising numbers of overdose deaths linked to illicit drugs.
Calling for expanded use of treatment options, the task force said support should be narrowed in on therapies backed with clinical evidence of benefit, including medication-assisted treatment (MAT) options such as buprenorphine.
