Like it or not, infectious disease providers are at the crossroads of the opioid epidemic. To fully treat infections related to injection drug use (IDU), they also have to address their patients’ underlying comorbidity—the drug addiction. This places them on the front line of the opioid epidemic, and it’s not a place they necessarily want to be.
