As ketamine continues to emerge as a viable medication for pain, there’s a need for organizations and stakeholders to develop guidance for prescribing ketamine as a pain treatment.

During the 2025 annual spring meeting of the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA), Steven Porter, MD, an associate professor of anesthesiology at Mayo Clinic, talked about how necessary it is for organizations like the American Society of Anesthesiologists and ASRA to release guidelines. 

Porter also discussed concerns over use of opioids in the general population because of the opioid crisis and where opioids should and shouldn’t be used.
