We are in the business of brokenness. Disease and trauma are the most common introductions to the people for whom we care. Relationships with patients and families are cultivated in these seasons of hardship. They often meet us in the ICU, trauma bay or following an emergent operation. Families bear the burdens of guilt and regret, wondering whether they could have acted sooner, urged more vehemently, or altogether prevented the circumstances of our encounter.
