No! Babies cannot be born addicted. Addiction is rooted in a self-destructive behavior. It requires the user to be involved in the decision to use a substance. Obviously, babies are not in control of their exposure, which is why it tugs at everyone’s heartstrings when the phrase “born addicted” is used.
The proper term for an opioid-dependent baby, which is what is meant by “addicted babies,” is neonatal abstinence
