Research Finds Pain Catastrophizing a Fluid Process With Distinct Trajectories

Denver—Rather than isolating pain catastrophizing at a single point in time, new research has identified the phenomenon as a dynamic process, and one that often changes in the first six months after surgery.

The observational study identified four longitudinal trajectories of postoperative pain catastrophizing—stable, worsening, remitting and unremitting—and revealed several preoperative clinical characteristics associated with these trajectories.
