Duloxetine Reduces Opioid Use Post-TKA

Duloxetine, a serotonin–norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor used to treat anxiety and depression, reduced postoperative opioids and improved patient satisfaction and rehabilitation after total knee arthroplasty (TKA), according to a new study (J Arthroplasty 2022;37[6S]:S147-S154).

Although multimodal analgesia is nothing new to TKA procedures, novel research has included the use of antidepressants, such as duloxetine. “We have used multimodal analgesia … for many years, but we
