Study Finds High Rates of Temporomandibular Joint Pain in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis

A study presented at the Canadian Rheumatology Association’s 2016 annual meeting adds incrementally to the rapidly growing literature on temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain in people with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA).

The team from Denmark, Germany and Canada found that 58% of 172 children who filled out a TMJ-pain questionnaire reported having such pain, and that fully 79% of those without TMJ pain had evidence of TMJ involvement on imaging (poster 153). In Denmark, all
