We are beginning to recognize that, as is seen in much of medicine in the 21st century, genetics may explain the variability of responses and predict more effective (or less dangerous) medication choices. By identifying the genetic risks and the most effective analgesic for an individual patient, the clinician (at least theoretically) could improve the efficacy of the pain medication and decrease the risk for iatrogenically induced overdose, addiction, and death.
